How We Review Credit Cards

Last Updated: May 2026

Clear Card Guide provides independent reviews of credit cards to help consumers make informed financial decisions. This page describes our review process, evaluation criteria, and how we keep our content accurate and useful.

What We Evaluate

Each credit card is evaluated across these key areas:

  • Annual Fee: Is the fee justified by the card benefits? Are there waiver options?
  • Sign-Up Bonus: What is the required spending threshold? How long does it take to earn?
  • Reward Rate: How much do you earn per dollar spent in different categories? Are there caps or rotation schedules?
  • Interest Rates: What is the APR range? How does it compare to competitors?
  • Foreign Transaction Fees: Will using this card abroad cost you extra?
  • Benefits: Travel credits, insurance, purchase protection, lounge access, and other perks.
  • Redemption Flexibility: How easy is it to use your rewards? What options are available?

How We Score

We score cards on a 1-10 scale across each evaluation area. An overall score reflects how well the card performs for typical consumer use cases — not just for users who will maximize every benefit.

We compare each card against its direct competitors in the same category (travel, cash back, secured, etc.) rather than comparing a travel card against a store credit card.

Editorial Independence

Our reviews are not influenced by card issuers. We do not accept payments from issuers for placement or positive coverage. If a card appears on our site, it is because our editorial team believes it offers genuine value to readers.

When We Update

Card terms change. When an issuer modifies rates, fees, or benefits, we update the relevant article and note the date of the last update. If you spot something that needs attention, please contact us.
